Sır gibi saklanan milli piyade tüfeği Mehmetçik-1, dünyada kullanılan 3. jenerasyon piyade tüfeklerinin en iyi özelliklerini üzerinde barındırıyor. 3 Temmuz 2011′de üretime başlandığı, 2012 yılı başlarında ise Mehmetçik tarafından kullanılmaya başlanacağı açıklanan ancak bu gerçekleşmediği için akıllarda soru işaretleri oluşturan tüfeğin, 7-10 Mayıs tarihleri arasında düzenlecek IDEF’13 Uluslararası Savunma Sanayii Fuarı’nda sergilenmesi gündemde. Bu konuda son kararı ise Savunma Sanayii Müsteşarlığı verecek.
Yerli piyade tüfeği projesi gecikmeye uğrayınca, birçok iddia ortaya atıldı. Üç adet örneği üretilen tüfeğin “Alman malı HK-416″ya benzediği ve Alman Heckler & Koch firmasının konuya müdahil olarak bu konuda lisans alınması zorunluluğunu dile getirdiği” de bu iddialar arasındaydı. Savunma Sanayii Müsteşarı Murad Bayar, bu iddiaları yalanlayarak, “Şu anda tüfeğimiz bilinmiyor. Hiçbir yerde gösterilmedi. Bu iddialar doğru değil. Milli piyade tüfeğinde ilk prototiplerimizin testleri olumlu. Şimdi bir set daha tüfek üretiyoruz. Onları da bir teste tabi tutacağız. Onların da sonuçları olumlu çıkarsa üretime geçeceğiz” açıklaması yapmıştı.
Mehmetçik-1 TSK istekleri esas alınarak geliştirildi. Tasarımdan itibaren tamamen özgün üç ayrı prototip 14 ay içinde MKE Kırıkkale Silah Fabrikası’nda üretildi. Tüfeğin üzerine gece görüş dürbünü, ışıldak, laser, bomba atar gibi aksesuarlar takılabilmesi öngörüldü.
Vatan, sır gibi saklanan o tüfeğin hem görüntüsüne hem de teknik özelliklerine ulaştı. Ağırlığı 4.3 kilogram, mermi çapı 7.62, boyu: 88 cm, dipcik uzatılınca 105 cm (20 adet mermi alıyor), mermi çıkış hızı, saniyede 810 metre olan “Mehmetçik-1″in etkili menzili ise 400 metre. Tüfeğin, Mayıs-Haziran 2010 içinde ilgili kurumlardan uzman personelin de katılımıyla yapılan test ve atışları başarıyla tamamlanmıştı. G3′lerin yerini alacak tüfeği, dünyada kullanılan 3, jenerasyon piyade tüfeklerinin en iyi özelliklerini üzerinde topladı.

Our first prototype tested positive in national infantry rifle . Now we are producing a set of more guns . I'll keep them to a test . If the results are positive they will go into production " had explained .
Soldiers TAF - 1 was developed based on requests . Three completely original design prototype within 14 months from the MKE Kırıkkale Weapons Factory was produced. Rifles on the night vision binoculars , searchlights , lasers , grenade launchers as accessories can be fitted anticipated.
