Boeing-747 400F uçağına takılan COIL (kimyasal oksijen iyot lazer) sistemiyle oluşturulan YAL1, balistik füzeleri yok etmesi için 2004 yılında üzerinde çalışılmaya başlanmış bir proje. ABD'nin havada seyreden füze imha sistemi olarak görev yapacak YAL1'in taşıdığı COIL sistemi, birbirine bağlı altı modülden oluşuyor. Her biri 3 ton ağırlığında olan modüller, imha edilecek balistik füze tespit edildiğinde 5 saniye içinde çok güçlü bir lazer üretiyor. Üretilen lazer sıradan bir haneye bir saatten fazla elektrik sağlayacak enerjiye sahip. 2009'da ilk test uçuşunu gerçekleştiren YAL, 2010'da yaptığı deneme uçuşunda iki füzeyi başarıyla imha etmeyi başardı.
